I found the whole exercise to be hugely rewarding, and got a great deal of pleasure out of searching back through years of memory to identify suitable items.<\/p>\n<p>So I decided that it would be silly to squander the work on ten posts scattered here and there in Facebook, and so have gathered them all together into one place &#8211; for my own convenience as much as anything else!<\/p>\n<p>So here we go&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/external-lht6-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/safe_image.php?d=AQBBqoNPN0xJ8icl&amp;w=220&amp;h=220&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fen%2Fthumb%2F9%2F95%2FYes_Going_for_the_One.jpg%2F220px-Yes_Going_for_the_One.jpg&amp;_nc_hash=AQALLl1wu_xy6dWo\" alt=\"Cover image - Yes... It&#8217;s <em>Going for the One<\/em>, by <strong>Yes<\/strong>, full of tracks which I love (and a few I&#8217;m not so struck by). Yes, it was <strong>Pink Floyd<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Dark Side of the Moon<\/em> (cover image courtesy of WIki). This time it&#8217;s <strong>Wishbone Ash<\/strong>, and <em>Argus<\/em>, something I listened to over and over. Another British band, this time from the West Country (rumour had it that they were the loudest band ever to play Exeter University). The\u00a0YouTube extract is <em>Time Was<\/em>&#8230; a splendid track to introduce this album<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wishbone Ash - Time Was\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SjIvjmJQJYE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51q7WcyOkVL.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image - Peter Finger... The Elf King (Amazon)\" width=\"200\" height=\"182\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover image &#8211; Peter Finger&#8230; The Elf King (Amazon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> Day 4 marks a transition from things that influenced me as listener to things which I tried to imitate as player. And I start with <strong>Peter Finger<\/strong>, a German acoustic guitarist who I tried (almost entirely unsuccessfully) to emulate. He did wonderful stuff with open tuning as well as conventional. This album &#8211; <em>The Elf King<\/em> &#8211; is the first of his that I came across.<br \/>\nThe track I&#8217;ve chosen from this excellent album is <em>Sabine<\/em>&#8230; well worth a listen&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sabine\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QrVH6EzVVhQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/61cDjJ0ZPCL._SX679_.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image - John Fahey... The Best of John Fahey (Amazon)\" width=\"226\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover image &#8211; John Fahey&#8230; The Best of John Fahey (Amazon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0<\/strong>Day 5 continues the theme of albums that influenced me as player. Peter Finger&#8217;s music was always seriously above my ability level, but <strong>John Fahey<\/strong> was a different story, and I tackled a lot of his work. He played a lot of pieces in dropped-D or various open tunings, of which this &#8211; <em>On the Sunny Side of the Ocean<\/em> &#8211; is one.<br \/>\nAnd in a never-before-heard-by-the-general-public move, I am linking to a very old and quite noisy recording of me playing this wonderful piece&#8230;<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-1844-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/datascenesdev.com\/Alexa\/voiceFiles\/On_the_Sunny_Side_of_the_Ocean.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/datascenesdev.com\/Alexa\/voiceFiles\/On_the_Sunny_Side_of_the_Ocean.mp3\">http:\/\/datascenesdev.com\/Alexa\/voiceFiles\/On_the_Sunny_Side_of_the_Ocean.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/f\/f7\/The_Hermit.jpg\/220px-The_Hermit.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image - John Renbourn... The Hermit (Wiki)\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover image &#8211; John Renbourn&#8230; The Hermit (Wiki)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>\u00a0Day 6 brought\u00a0another of my playing influences. This time it&#8217;s <strong>John Renbourn<\/strong>, and out of all his sundry guitar work I have picked something from <em>The Hermit<\/em>.\u00a0Specifically, it&#8217;s a selection of three pieces originally by the Irish harpist Turlough O&#8217;Carolan, transcribed for guitar. The pieces are<br \/>\n<em>1. Lamentation of Owen Roe O&#8217;Neill<\/em><br \/>\n<em>2. Lord Inchiquin<\/em><br \/>\n<em>3. O&#8217;Carolan&#8217;s Concerto<\/em><span class=\"text_exposed_show\"><br \/>\nI played these on both guitar and lute (for a while) and loved them. The rest of the album &#8211; and the rest of Renbourn &#8211; is well worth dipping into as well!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"John Renbourn - Three Pieces By O&#039;Carolan\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SQl_Nmpq_vA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guitarvideos.com\/prodlarge\/145coloradscan.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image - 10 Classic Rags ( (Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, http:\/\/www.guitarvideos.com)\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover image &#8211; 10 Classic Rags ( (Stefan Grossman&#8217;s Guitar Workshop, http:\/\/www.guitarvideos.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0<\/strong>Day 7 was another playing choice, and this time it&#8217;s a compendium called <em>10 Classic Rags for Guitar by Scott Joplin<\/em>, as played by various artists.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve chosen <em>Weeping WIllow,<\/em> played by <strong>Ton Engels<\/strong>, not because I know very much about Ton or have listened to much of his playing, but because this was a rag I worked on a lot. I&#8217;m not saying I ever got especially good at it, but it&#8217;s a nice, pleasant but challenging piece to play. Tubular Bells (Amazon)\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover image &#8211; Mike Oldfield&#8230; Tubular Bells (Amazon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>8.\u00a0<\/strong>Day 8 took me back again to my listening choices rather than playing&#8230; and back a lot of years to an album that hugely affected me and a great many other people&#8230; <em>Tubular Bells<\/em>, by <strong>Mike Oldfield<\/strong>. The Snowgoose (Amazon)\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover image &#8211; Camel&#8230; The Snowgoose (Amazon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>9.\u00a0<\/strong>Day 9, and once again it&#8217;s a band which I started listening to many years ago, and still do now. I even heard them once at what was then Guildford Civic Hall (it&#8217;s much posher now and called by a much grander name). The group &#8211; <strong>Camel<\/strong>&#8230; the album, well it;s the first of theirs I got to know, namely <em>The Snowgoose<\/em>, a thoroughly splendid instrumental piece, thematically built around the Dunkirk &#8220;small ships&#8221; rescue.<br \/>\nThe track? Well, it&#8217;s not an easy choice, especially as the pieces flow and merge into each other, but I&#8217;ve gone for <em>Flight of the Snowgoose<\/em>, a central part of the whole album&#8230;<br \/>\nWhole album<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Camel - The Great Marsh\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NoiBtAXRnIo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Flight of the Snowgoose<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Camel - Flight Of The Snow Goose\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Kkn6nFKOnhM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51L8SMbgllL._AC_US500_QL65_.jpg\" alt=\"Cover image - Kayak... Well, my own writing is tending to draw on Arthurian themes just now, and Ninane in particular is a fascinating figure who (in time to come) will get a bit more narrative treatment from me in her own story&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">That&#8217;s it folks, all ten albums, spanning something like 35 years of my musical life!
