There have been some great pictures of Mars coming out recently\u00a0from the Indian Mars Orbiter spacecraft<\/a>\u00a0so I thought I’d include a few here, together with an ESA video of a simulated flyby of one of the great valleys on Mars, the\u00a0Mawrth Vallis<\/em>.<\/p>\n

So here is Phobos, tiny against the curve of Mars and very close in its orbit. Most of chapter 2 of Timing<\/em> takes place on this moon, partly at Asaph, a (hypothetical) settlement facing away from the planet. and partly at a sort of industrial estate in the Stickney crater facing inwards.<\/p>\n

And here is a three-d representation of Olympus Mons<\/em>, the second highest mountain in the solar system. In the book, there’s a financial training college on the lower slopes of the mountain, roughly in the foreground as you are looking at the picture.<\/p>\n
